about

Joy Guidry's critically acclaimed 2022 album Radical Acceptance was heralded as "an intense, vulnerable work that demands equally thoughtful attention and engagement" by Pitchfork and "explosive free jazz" by The Wire. Leaning into the quieter and reflective moments of that album, "Almost There" is a meditative ambient composition that pulls from inspirations such as Hiroshi Yoshimura's Music for Nine Postcards and Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakomoto's collaborative work. Guidry's characteristic bassoon both lays the ambient ground floor (if the floor in this case was a placid body of water) as well as pulling deeply emotional melodies towards the track's later half. According to Guidry, "I wanted to write a song about all the peace I have found this last year. Healing is a never-ending journey, but I'm happy to be able to smile and truly mean it. Where I can fully rest without fear of what's around the corner. I don't know if I will ever be healed, but I know I am almost there. I have peace rooted in my soul and am so happy to live fully and rest deeply."
